SAN XAVIER MISSION
After exploring downtown, we head for the San Xavier Mission.
The mission was founded in the early eighteenth century by Father Eusebio
Francisco Kino. He named it
San Xavier in honor of his chosen patron, St. Francis Xavier. It resides in the San Xavier District of Tohono O'odham Nation, about twelve miles south of Tucson.
For some reason, upon our arrival I became obsessed with photographing
three crosses on
a hill
behind
the
mission. Unfortunately, people are always going up and down the hill
and a clear, uninhabited shot is not easy to obtain. It became my mission
to obtain such a shot. This began what would become the first of many
photographs of crosses
on
this trip.
While exploring the mission and its surroundings, the weather started
to turn and a strong wind began to blow. This provided us with a good
sky
along
with
the challenge
of keeping our cameras steady at times. I continued to shoot in mostly black & white,
though
did take a couple of color
photos.
As
the wind continued to worsen and the sky continued to darken, we decided
to call it a day.
