COLOSSAL CAVE

The key ingredients to photographing inside a cave are possession of a tripod and lots of time. As I had neither, I did not take any photos inside of Colossal Cave. However, I did take photographs of the surrounding area. As I hadn't taken any photos since Tibet, my initial photos were considered practice--my way of excusing how crappy they turned out. During this time, I did discover a love for photographing cacti in black and white.

I should make note here that until Tibet, I photographed almost exclusively in black and white for over twenty years. On this trip, while some color photos were taken, I returned to my old black and white habit. Those familiar with my black and white work will see some common themes--shadows, textures, high contrasts--but I hope I got in a few new things too.

I didn't spend all my time photographing cacti. There were some buildings and a ranch I took several photos at. Keep in mind that I am still "practicing." One never forgets how to photograph, it just sometimes takes a while to remember everything that needs to be remembered.
