GOLDEN SUBTITLES
The flight from JFK to Beijing flies over the Arctic, making for some breathtaking
views from the window. I'm sitting besides one of my group, a pretty blonde with
very striking eyes. I pass the time with idle conversation, cat naps, music,
and finally by watching The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and
the
Wardrobe. For some reason I'm enthralled with the idea of it being shown
with golden Chinese subtitles.
Arrive in Beijing to the joys of baggage claim and Customs, both of
which go relatively smoothly. The city itself is crowded, everyone
seems in a hurry, and the air is filled with pollution.
I'm from Los Angeles, so this is nothing new and something I learned
to deal
with
years ago.
I'm
looking forward to being off-line for the next few weeks--no
cellphone or laptop on this trip.
Our hotel is nice. We have our first of many meals served with rice
and chopsticks.
