GHOST IN THE MONASTERY
Wake up in the middle of the night nauseous with heart palpitations.
By the morning it is just nausea. Fortunately for me, it is a short travel
day. We begin by visiting Tashilhunpo Monastery, where a vast tangka
is on display. It is comprised of three 100 foot tall pieces.
As the day progresses I become more and more light-headed and am subject
to bouts of not being able to catch my breath. We visit the Pelkor Chöde
Monastery but the air inside is too dense for me, so I rest awhile in
the courtyard.
I snap a few photos
to
pass the time. I think one of the youths there thinks I am a ghost
because I have become so pale.
By lunch I can hardly stand. Tenpa, our guide in Tibet, gets me to the
hotel in Gyantse and supplies me with oxygen. I rest some. When I awake,
I have an incredible fever. I take some medicine but nothing seems to
help. I fall back asleep. It
is a restless night accompanied by a thunderstorm outside.
Do not blame the sky
