BIRTHDAY IN BEIJING

My birthday. Today we begin our travels with a compressed tour of the city--Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and part of the Great Wall. It is hot and humid, making for an even longer day.

There is not much visually to Tiananmen Square and its surrounding buildings, it is more a place of recent history. The Forbidden City, on the other hand, is both a place of vast history and visual splendor. We only explore a fraction of its vastness as the whole area would take days to explore.

I've dreamed of seeing the Great Wall since learning about it in grade school. Like the pyramids of Egypt, it is something that captures the imagination for life. It is a very hazy day, making photography a challenge, but standing on the wall, one cares little for photography.
