CHANTING & BARTERING

We begin our day with a visit to the Potala Palace. Founded by the Fifth Dalai Lama in the seventeenth century, it served as home to the Dalai Lamas until the current one's flight from Tibet during the Cultural Revolution. It is divided into a Red and a White Palace and is an architectural marvel.

Later we are given an hour to roam the Barkhor before attending a chanting session at the Jokhang. I make a wrong turn in search of something cold to drink and end up down a very aggressive lane of the Barkhor. At one point I have three vendors holding me in place while I barter over a singing bowl. After thirty minutes I end up with two bowls and a bracelet for less than half of what the one bowl was originally priced at.

Sitting in the Jokhang listening to the monks chant is an incredible experience. Many of us find it quite meditative by the end and are sorry when it is over.

Yak butter candles
Scent the guttural chanting
Mind there and away
