FIRST GLIMPSE OF THE GODDESS

Day of traveling heading for Tingri. We begin the day at the Zhashenlunbu Temple, founded by the first Dalai Lama in 1447. I have not photographed much within temples and monasteries, but I did have to photograph the Maitreya Buddha Statue here. It cost me ¥75 (about $10), but is well worth it. Here we also get to witness the monks debating, which is an interesting experience. As a follower of Zen, I have never seen anything quite like it.

We make many stops along the way and I take some photos at each. At one pass we reach our highest elevation of the trip at 17,100 feet (about 5,200 meters), and also catch our first glimpse of Everest, or Chomolungma ("Goddess Mother of the World") in Tibetan. It is a wonderfully clear view and we all take advantage of it.

Long travel day and I retire early to bed. We'll be at base camp in the early afternoon tomorrow.

Clear sky with few clouds
Seems like the mother goddess
Enjoys our esteem
