TOWERS, BEACHES, AND MOUNTAINS

The following morning finds me at Belem Tower, built in the early sixteenth century in the Portuguese late-Gothic style, the Manueline, to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition. Nearby is the Monument to the Discoveries, which celebrates the Portuguese who took part in the Age of Discovery of the 15th and 16th centuries. Also nearby is the Hieronymites Monastery, again in the Manueline style.

The afternoon finds me in Cascais, a former fishing village turned resort for both locals and foreigners. I take a few photos downtown before finding an Irish pub, where I stop for a pint of Guinness (properly poured, I might add). I then head toward the beach, where I snap a few more photos.

Next up is another resort location, Sintra, which is overlooked by the Castle of the Moors and has been a favorite of Portuguese royalty through the years. After a stop in the National Palace, I wander about the town a bit before stopping for a Coke and a danish. Then it's back to Lisbon, where I spend a less adventurous night.
