FREE DAY IN RUINS

Today is a free day in Cusco. Three of us hire a taxi in the morning and head out to three sites: Chinchero, Maras, and Moray. Chinchero, known as the "birthplace of the rainbow" to the Incas, combines both Inca ruins and a typical Andean village. There is a colonial church just above the main village square that is built on Inca foundations. To the left of this church are extensive ruins, consisting mostly of terracing, that seem to go on for miles.

On the way to Moray is the small town of Maras. We stop in the main square on the way back to Cusco and take some photos. At Moray, different levels of concentric terraces are carved into three bowls, two large and one smaller. As each level is believed to have its own micro-climate, it is thought that the Incas used this area as a laboratory to test crops for optimal growing conditions. I take several photos in color and black & white.

The rest of the day is spent relaxing knowing that we are heading into the Sacred Valley in the morning.
