LEAVING LIMA
Having not seen much of Lima, two of us share a taxi into downtown before
then sharing another taxi to the airport. As we are both carrying all
our luggage, we decide on Lima's Plaza
de Armas
as
a central location where
one of
us
can wander and take photos while the other guards the bags. I head off
first. The Plaza consists of both a cathedral and the Palacio de Gobierno,
complete with armed guards and armored vehicles. Two police officers
patrolling the plaza flag down and negotiate a taxi to the airport for
us and I last see my companion as she's hurriedly trying to find the
gate for her already boarding plane.
Both flights home are uneventful. Security is tight and carry-ons are
searched in San Salvador. On the flight to LAX, I sit beside a girl that
reminds me of the actress Summer Glau--as she spends most of the flight
with a blanket over her head, we don't get to talk much. Security is
also tight leaving baggage claim in LA. Coming off the plane from El
Salvador, wearing a poncho and carrying an Israeli Mossad tactical duffle
bag, I figure
I'll be stopped for sure, but there is no problem. I'm back home and
back to work in a few days.
