FLOATING ISLANDS
The following morning we head out early onto Lake Titicaca. Here I take
a few
photos on
our way to the Uros Islands. A lover of light and shadow, I can't resist
taking some dramatic
shots along
the way.
It's about a half hour's motorized boat ride from Puno to reach
the floating
islands
of
the Uros community. These reed islands were begun centuries ago in
an attempt by the Uros to isolate themselves from the
more aggressive Collas and Incas. After visiting one of the islands
for a while, we head out on a reed boat toward another, much larger
island
that
includes a bar, restaurant, mini market, and lodge.
Back on the motorized boat, it's another three hours to Isla
Taquile,
which has been inhabited for thousands of years and presently has a population
of about 2000 (not counting the tourists). Once we reach the island,
we take the back route up to the top, which is longer than the main route
but
also
far
less steep and far less
traveled. After lunch we return to port. It's been a long day--even our
guide sleeps on the way back to Puno.
