ANOTHER ROAD TO RUINS
In the morning we begin our third long travel today, this time back into Guatemala and north to Tikal. We will actually be staying on Laguna Petenchel, a small lake east of Santa Elena. Tikal itself is about another hour's drive further into the jungle. While not as oppressive as in the Amazon in Peru, the heat and humidity are noticeable. No piranha this time, though there are crocodiles.
For lunch we stop in Rio Dulce,
lined with yachts from around the world. There are also some turtles
in a pond behind the restaurant I snap a few shots of. Otherwise, it is an uneventful day. I pass some time listening to Genesis' Three Sides Live album, the remastered version with the fourth side live, along with their previous live album, Seconds Out.
In the morning, on the way to Tikal, we stop to get a look at Lago de Petén Itzá,
which at 133 sq km makes it the largest lake in Guatemala (Lake Atitlán is the second largest at 132 sq km). But the focus of today is Tikal, founded around 700 BC. I am anxiously anticipating its towering pyramids, which I intend to climb.
