ALASKA (July 2008)
Many years ago I felt a call to Alaska. Unfortunately, lack of money
and time left it just a calling. A few years later I contemplated applying
for a teaching position there as it would give me an excuse to go north
for the interview. So when I was given the chance to go on an Alaskan
glacier cruise, I jumped at it. While it's not my usual style of trip,
I do get to sign up for some semi-adventurous shore excursions. If my
leg were in better shape, I would have signed up for some of the more
extreme excursions, but I'll have to settle for helicopters, seaplanes,
Jeeps, and glaciers.
Before heading north, I spent a weekend in Miami. I began my stay by
making a stop along North Beach, as I had never seen the Atlantic Ocean before. Then I headed out
to the Monastery
of St. Bernard de Clairvaux,
brought over stone by stone from Spain by William Randolph Hearst in
1925. Next day was Vizcaya,
built around the turn of the last century. This was followed by a stop
at The
Biltmore,
along with a few photos of the Coral
Gables Congregational Church
across the street. Lastly, as I was staying in Biscayne
Bay,
I wandered around the area looking for anything interesting to photograph.
