PRINCE RUPERT (PIKE ISLAND)
Prince Rupert is a rather new port, so the shore excursions
are limited. I am off to Pike Island, about a forty minute boat ride
from the harbor.
This was the ancient home of the Tsimshian people, though
the island has not been inhabited for over two thousand years.
Once docked, we head on a tour of the small island. I take some shots
of the shore and various other sites.
This is a good location
for black & white
photography. We are shown some depressions in the ground
where ancient villages once stood. I also volunteer to try a salmonberry. Though coming from the raspberry family, I find it tastes more
like a mulberry.
We then head over to the east facing shore where medicine men had carved
some petroglyphs
into rocks. I photograph those I can find, amazed that anything remains after over two thousand years of erosion. We are then treated to a BBQ
salmon dinner. What is not cooked is put out for the eagles and ravens
in the
area. I head down to the boat early to get in a few last shots
of this beautiful island. Then it's back to port.
